God Snippets

Has God ever spoken to you through daily activities or using practical experiences? Every now and then, God will speak to me through my daily activities or interactions with my son. I do my best to write them down so that I can remember them and share them. One of the three I’m going to share with you came to me a few years ago; the other two came just recently.

Windshields

As I was driving to work one morning and the sun hit my windshield, I noticed how dirty my windshield looked.  However, when the sun wasn’t shining directly on it, the windshield looked clean and normal. And then I realized, it’s the same with God. In the darkness, all our dirty spots are covered up and seem normal to us. But when the Light hits, all the dirty spots are exposed, showing us exactly what needs to be cleansed and purified by God.

John 12:46, NLT says, “I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in Me will no longer remain in the dark.”

Shopping Carts

My son has reached the age where now instead of being a passive participant and riding in the shopping cart, he wants to be an active participant and push the cart.  Plus, he doesn’t want my help.  As he says, “I do it Mama. Don’t help!” And I politely tell him, as I’m still holding on to the cart, that I do need to help him. I remind him that he isn’t tall enough yet to see over the handles, so I need to help guide him, because I can see what he can’t see.

And it reminded me that we are the same way with God. We think we have it all figured out; that we know where to go and what’s in front of us. But God reminds us, sometimes gently, sometimes not (for those extra stubborn ones), that HE CAN see what’s ahead of us. We only think we have it all figured out when we really don’t. If we don’t tender our heart to His guidance, we’re going to crash straight into everything He’s trying to help us avoid!

Proverbs 29:18, NLT says, “When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild. But whoever obeys the law is joyful.”

“But true wisdom and power are found in God; counsel and understanding are his.” (Job 12:13, NLT)

Don’t be the strong-willed child, thinking you can do it all on your own. Listen for God’s voice and guidance so you’ll avoid crashing into the things you never saw coming.

Convenience Stores

I was driving past a convenience store and noticed they are changing the exterior of the building.  I have no idea what they’re actually doing or how they’re changing it. But I had the thought, “Unless they change the inside, it won’t matter what the outside looks like.  It’ll still be old and dirty inside.”

And then I realized, it’s the same thing with us (people). You can change your outward appearance as much as you want…your hair color, your hair length, your nails, workout, eat better…whatever it is you’re trying to change. But if you don’t work on changing the inside, your heart, none of it matters.  All the ugliness will still be inside.

Luke 6:45, NLT says, “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.”

Proverbs 26:23, NLT says, “Smooth words may hide a wicked heart, just as a pretty glaze covers a clay pot.”

And Proverbs 27:19, NLT says, “As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.”

Start the work on your inside, your heart, and the rest will fall into place.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10, NLT)

“And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.” (Ezekiel 36:26, NLT)

God is always speaking to us no matter what we’re doing; it’s us that need to be listening for His gentle, guiding voice. I hope these help you to see God and His lessons in the things you do every day.

October Scriptures

For the past few years, I have taken on the goal of reading my Bible through one of the one-year reading plans.  Mostly, I’ve used the NLT One-Year Chronological Bible. I seem to prefer this particular one because it’s written as it happened, in chronological order.  It’s interesting to me, when reading the Bible this way, how events in history transpired simultaneously through some of the different books and also the different order of the books from how the Bible is laid out.

Like I said, I read the One-Year Bible for several years using this particular version.  But last year, 2019, I didn’t just want to read the Bible, I wanted to make sure I got something out of the daily reading. So I decided I would find one verse or scripture passage that spoke the most to me during each day of Bible reading.

My goal was to read the Bible each day, highlight the specific verse or scripture passage that I found and then write it down to keep in a journal. I used a certain highlighter color so I could keep track of which verse I picked for the daily reading, versus other highlights already in there.

Then, late last year, I decided I wanted to do more with my daily verses, besides keeping them in a journal.  I wanted to share them. So for each month in 2020, I plan to post the scriptures I found for that month in 2019.

My prayer for you is that as you read these scriptures that spoke to me last year, they will speak to you right here and now; either to something you’re searching for, an answer you need or just confirmation of what God has been speaking to you.

October 1—Matthew 12:18

“Look at my Servant, whom I have chosen. He is my Beloved, who pleases me. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations…”

October 2—Luke 6:27

“But to you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you…”

October 3—Matthew 6:30

And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?

October 4—Matthew 11:28-30

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

October 5—Matthew 12:30

“Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me…”

October 6—Mark 4:22

For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light.

October 7—Matthew 9:21

…for she thought, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.”

October 8—Matthew 10:26

“But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.”

October 9—Matthew 14:27

But Jesus spoke to them at once, “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage, I am here!”

October 10—Matthew 15:18

But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you.

October 11—Matthew 15:31

The crowd was amazed! Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel.

October 12—Matthew 16:15-16

Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.”

October 13—Matthew 18:18

“I tell you the truth, whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”

October 14—John 8:7

They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!”

October 15—Luke 11:9-10

“And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened for you.  For everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.”

October 16—Luke 11:23

“Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.”

October 17—Luke 12:40

“You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.”

October 18—Luke 14:11

“For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

October 19—Luke 16:10

“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.”

October 20—Luke 17:33

“If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it.”

October 21—Luke 18:14

“I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

October 22—Mark 10:43-45

“But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

October 23—Luke 19:38

“Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!”

October 24—Matthew 21:22

“You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it.”

October 25—Matthew 21:42

Then Jesus asked them, “Didn’t you ever read this in the scriptures? ‘The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.’”

October 26—Matthew 23:12

“But those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

October 27—Mark 13:22

“For false Messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.”

October 28—Matthew 25:29

“To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.”

October 29—Mark 14:24

And he said to them, “This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.”

October 30—John 14:3

“When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”

October 31—John 16:33

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart because I have overcome the world.”
